📜 Text of the Poem – A Photograph

The cardboard shows me how it was
When the two girl cousins went paddling,
Each one holding one of my mother’s hands,
And she the big girl – some twelve years or so.

All three stood still to smile through their hair
At the uncle with the camera. A sweet face,
My mother’s, that was before I was born.
And the sea, which appears to have changed less,
Washed their terribly transient feet.

Some twenty – thirty – years later
She’d laugh at the snapshot. “See Betty
And Dolly,” she’d say, “and look how they
Dressed us for the beach.” The sea holiday
Was her past, mine is her laughter. Both wry
With the laboured ease of loss.

Now she’s been dead nearly as many years
As that girl lived. And of this circumstance
There is nothing to say at all.
Its silence silences.

📑 Summary in Hindi –

📄 Explanation of the Poem

  1. First Stanza:
The poet sees a photo of her mother when she was 12 years old. She was standing on the beach with her cousins. The photo was taken by her uncle. The poet says her mother looked sweet and happy. The sea has not changed much, but their feet were "transient" – meaning people change and time passes.

  2. Second Stanza:
Years later, the poet's mother used to look at the photo and smile. She remembered the beach trip and laughed about the old clothes they wore. For the poet, her memory is not the beach trip but her mother’s laughter. Both are gone now – the mother’s childhood and the mother herself.

  3. Third Stanza:
Now, the poet says her mother has been dead for many years – almost as many as she had lived in the photo. The poet has no words to describe this feeling. Only silence remains, and that silence is powerful – it "silences" everything else.
